Creating branded, trackable short links effectively is important because it makes them easy to share, recognizable to your audience, and allows you to get timely insights into how people interact with them. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step by step, including setting the destination, choosing a domain and back-half, and configuring email notifications so you can track engagement.

Creating a Link

  1. On the main navigation panel, click Links.

  2. In the upper-right corner of your Links page, click Add Link.

  3. In the popup, fill in the details:

  • Destination URL – The page you want people to land on.

  • Link Name – Optional, just to help you recognize the link. If you don’t add a name, the system will automatically generate one based on the URL, such as using the page title or domain.

  • Domain – By default, links use wisestamp.link. If you’ve set up a custom domain, it will appear in the dropdown for you to select. See Setting Up a Custom Domain for Links to learn how to set one up.

  • Back-half – You can type your own or leave it blank, and the system will generate one for you at random.

!note!Adding a custom domain, such as your company's own domain, along with a custom back-half is what makes your short link branded. Branded links are more recognizable and memorable for customers.!/note!

  • Turn on link alerts – Email notifications will alert you as soon as someone interacts with your link. Only the link owner will receive these alerts. There are two types of email notifications:

    • First click: Instant email the first time someone clicks your link or scans your QR code.

    • Total clicks: An email including a summary of all activity every 30 minutes (if there is new activity).

!note! Email notifications are especially helpful when timing is critical—for example, tracking webinar registrations before spots fill up, seeing when someone opens your payment link, or knowing right away when someone interacts with a job application.!/note!

  1. Click Save.

Troubleshooting

Why can’t I create my link?

There are a few reasons you might not be able to create a new link:

  1. Invalid destination URL: This can happen if:

    • The destination URL is broken.

    • The combination of back-half + domain is not unique (someone else is using it).

    • You included special characters in the back-half that aren’t allowed.

    • The back-half + domain you’re trying to use was recently deleted.

  2. Back-half recently used or deleted: If you recently deleted a short link, the back-half cannot be reused for 30 days. This ensures anyone who still has the old link isn’t redirected unexpectedly. To fix this, you can slightly change the back-half (for example, add a number or short word) to create the link immediately.

Why can't I change the domain when creating a new link?

When creating a new link, the domain will default to wisestamp.link unless you’ve already set up a custom domain. A custom domain must be created and ready before it can be used for Links.

If you want to learn more about custom domains for Links, see Setting Up a Custom Domain for Links.

Why is the link I created not working for people?

If your link leads to an error instead of the destination page, it could be due to one of these reasons:

  • Recently deleted back-half: The same back-half was used for a deleted link less than 30 days ago.

  • Edited link: Changing the domain or back-half breaks any existing copies of the link.

  • Custom domain not ready: The systems that manage the domain need time to update everywhere.

Why can’t I create a link with a certain back-half?

  • The back-half may already be taken by someone else.

  • If you recently deleted a short link, that back-half can’t be reused for 30 days. This prevents people with the old link from being sent to the wrong page.

  • If you need the link right away, try adjusting the back-half slightly–for example, by adding a number or a short word.
